How I Lost 25 Pounds For My Wedding

This pandemic has been hard on us. That is not a positive way to start a blog but it’s our reality. The restrictions have decreased the time we spend doing our favourite recreational activities. I play badminton very sparingly now given the nightly curfews. That is being lifted now but earlier this year the decreased physical activity and pandemic related stress has caused me to gain a few pounds.

I meticulously measure and record my weight as I take my health and risk for non-communicable diseases seriously. Things got out of hand this year when I recorded a whopping 224 lbs. This was about May 2021 and it really shocked me. I had to do something about it. I didn’t like the way I looked. I mean, while I was still drop-dead gorgeous and ladies were still fainting at my sight to the point where I had to ask ‘when dem ago stop?’, I still felt uncomfortable with the added weight. I felt sluggish and could barely run a sub 30 minute 5km distance.

The Influence

I got engaged on independence day as I emancipated myself from the shackles and sadness of the single life. Before picking a wedding day I decided to get to work on my body fat. I started in august with a vegan diet. This did not last long as it is so hard and expensive to maintain a vegan diet in Jamaica without preparing all your meals at home. I then transitioned into the 16/8 intermittent fasting strategy. I would eat during any 8-hour window for the day and fast the remaining 16 hours. This worked!

I have since been combining the vegan diet with intermittent fasting as much as I can to maximize weight loss and I noticed the following:

  1. I felt more energetic.
  2. I lost weight (fat) fast.
  3. Decreased body odour with no deodorant use.
  4. Better performance during exercise.
  5. Increased confidence.

On the day before my wedding, I recorded 199 lbs. I Lost 25 lbs in about three months while trying new strategies. This was done with NO additional exercise.

The Motivation

I have a family history of type 2 diabetes and I am well aware of how to avoid this lifestyle disease. My push to lose fat was to prevent the onset of this illness. Also, I wanted to look my best for my wedding day so I made extra effort to lose the fat. I purchased a suit for my wedding that was a size smaller than it should be to push myself to lose the fat. I was so successful I had to have a tailor tighten certain areas of my suit.

The journey continues and in order to effectively lose weight and keep it off, I have to change my lifestyle permanently. As such I will be using the following strategies to maximize weight loss and to keep it off:

  1. Avoid late-night eating using the 16/8 intermittent fast.
  2. Vegan Diet.
  3. Daily Exercise.
  4. Avoid driving to increase movement (Using public transportation increases average movement each day).

On my honeymoon, I ate a lot, decreased exercise and as such I gained a few pounds. With this new commitment, I anticipate significant weight loss. I will report on my experience at the end of the year.
